U.S. St. Stephen's Land Office - case files of private land claims investigated by the Board of Commissioners, 1786-1846.

District land offices began setting up Boards of Commissioners in 1803 to investigate private land claims. The Boards gathered evidence, interrogated claimants and witnesses and rendered decisions based on their investigations. These volumes contain case files consisting of transcribed copies (in Eng.) of documents relating to land grants made by the Spanish, French, or English governments in the Mobile, Ala. area. Included are copies of the land grants and accompanying material, such as petitions requesting the grant and affadavits supporting the petition. The parcel of land is usually described in some detail, as is the exact location of the land. Often personal information about the claimant is included to support the claim. Some volumes contain records of surveys of the disputed land which were ordered by the Commissioners, and copies of the patent certificates issued at the completion of the investigation. These records help illuminate the work of the Board of Commissioners in Ala. and provide detailed information concerning land grants made by the British, French and Spanish in the area.
